My photos need help....

I love mother of pearl-buttons, discs, buckles, etc. but I find them hard to photograph. The light reflects and shines and absorbs odd colors. I've sold several pieces like this pin and barrette but the colors arent't true.

Here's my latest barrette in the shop but the picture could be/should be better. Anyone have any suggestions? In advance...thanks!

Hi Barbra,

Here's what I do. I put the item I want to photograph on a white dinner plate (I have some from Pottery Barn that work great) then put the plate near a sunny window, not IN the sun but in the ambient light. Then I use my digital camera on a macro setting. Taking pics of jewelry is tough! I hope some of these tips prove helpful!

Are you using a light box? I made an inexpensive one out of foam core and use some clamp lights that I clamp onto the foam core. I use daylight bulbs for lighting (and tissue paper if the light needs diffusing). My camera isn't the best, but it seems to have improved the quality of my pictures somewhat. Although, I'll be the first to admit my pictures still need professional assistance :-)

Cute barrettes! I use a light box, as well. I've found the diffused light to help a lot with glare of that kind. The instructions I used to make my light box are found here: http://www.instructables.com/id/Light-Studio-for-Photographers-Tabletop/?ALLSTEPS
I also recently purchased Photoshop Elements (much less expensive than the full Photoshop packagage and plenty for what I do) and this is excellent doing minor adjustments on my photos. Feel free to convo me on etsy, or leave a comment on my blog if you have other questions, I'm happy to help, if I can. Good luck with your pics!

mother of pearl buttons look good against skin... someone holding it in their hand... just a thought.
